Wednesday 25th, April / MCG / 3:20
The biggest game outside of the finals is here, and it’s shaping up to be a massive one. The Pies and Bombers both won last week so they both bring in decent form in what is always an exciting occasion regardless of their ladder positions.
Collingwood put on a clinic against Adelaide last week on their home deck, Essendon knocked off an undefeated Port Adelaide side. The sides return to the home of football this afternoon and will play in front of a crowd close to 100,000.
Players lift on the big stage and by the end of the afternoon we’ll learn who has what it takes to compete at the highest level. This afternoon’s match has four current ANZAC Day medallists in Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom, David Zaharakis and Joe Daniher.
Could we have a proven ANZAC day performer take the honours again? Or perhaps a newcomer will be their clubs hero. There’s many names who could come out and make a difference today. Brodie Grundy, Zach Merrett, Michael Hurley and Adam Treloar.
The Stats that Matter
Collingwood and Essendon both rank in the top 5 for scoring efficiency. Essendon rank #1 for running bounces and Collingwood rank #1 for tackles. This has the making of an exciting game!
In addition, Essendon convert a defensive rebound into a score more than 16 other clubs. They play an exciting brand of football, and the fans absolutely love it.
In their win last week, the Pies won the clearance and uncontested possession count. The out tackled the Crows and had 60 more touches. Collingwood will look to control the play over a fast-moving Bombers and winning in those areas will help them on their way.
This match could come down to how well the Bombers can convert set shots into a goal. Collingwood so far do it better this year, so the Bombers’ forwards will have to be on top of their game.
Collingwood are 2nd for centre clearances, but the Bombers 1st or clearances around the ground. Whoever can get on top in the midfield will go a long way to helping their team win the match.
Sam Murray is a lock in Collingwood’s defence, and has been a lock in our Supercoach teams. He’s averaging 79 with a price of 251k and a breakeven of -40 so he’ll continue to generate cash and be a a starter in our team.
Michael Hurley continues to be Mr. Consistent in defence. He averages 100 and is only in 14% of teams. Could be someone you look at bringing in if you still have Michael Hibberd. (Guilty)
Tip and Best Bets
This is shaping up to be a great game. The two side are going to come out and give everything they’ve got in front of a massive crowd. Theres’s big matchups on every line. Pendles vs Merrett. Grundy vs Bellchambers. Cox vs Hurley. Scharenberg vs Daniher. Thomas vs Smith. Reid vs Hooker. This is going to be a pressure-filled, stake-filled, exciting game and we cannot wait!
It’ll come down to the one on ones and who can take the most advantage of the opportunities in front of them. Going with the Bombers – just.
